Cooking is Chemistry!

Just note that the claim is something I believe, it is something which I learned at school and regularly helps me to understand about how food combinations often have some rather astonishing results! I used to love chemistry with my Dad, we would regularly practice experiments in the shed in the back garden. The actual academics of chemistry bores me silly. Yet more recently I am learning about the substance and subsistence of life, and how everything around is is energy. That is a fact.

What I have had experienced today in learning is about the fascinating way in which we enjoy foods and the amazing growth of our food, it doesn’t originate from the supermarket! The order I placed for my food there was one item missing, and I had ordered something that was essential for my cooking and that if I don’t have the missing item I will have to use the item I ordered for my baking. And the food being prepared on a television program reminded me of times that I have had to be imaginative about cooking with whatever I found and that is where the magic is of chemistry.

In the book I am reading about the chemistry of life mentioned about the chick embryo’s heart cells that continued to create more cells and my former cooking experiences of using eggs in baking. Life is energy and whatever substance we eat is from life, be it an egg or a seed both are life in suspension. I choose to eat plant based items because I don’t like eating animal products. And I don’t judge those who do eat animals.

There is something magical about life and chemistry because cooking is essential not just for eating and stuffing food into our bodies, food is created for pleasure too. Children love to play with their food, and that is essential for their experiences of the world and a love and respect for eating and cooking.

Whenever you cook with your niece, nephew, son, daughter just enlighten them about the enjoyment of chemical reactions in cooking, they will learn so much, not just as facts but experiencing ‘experiments in the kitchen’.
